“You missed the exit,” I said, as we sailed on past it one cold December evening. “Ugh, the traffic is bad on the other side of the freeway. It’s going to take forever to get back to the hotel.”
My husband groaned about it and at the next exit, we decided to take the side roads. We meandered through a neighborhood and all of a sudden, I noticed a sparkling jewel in the darkness.
“What is that?” I asked.

A Sparkling Temple in the Night
“It looks like an amazing Christmas display,” I said, with the holidays on my mind. “Or something… different.”
It was exotic. I could tell it had nothing to do with the holidays upon further inspection. It wasn’t what one normally saw on the stark, snowy Ohio landscape. Yet, there it was in front of my eyes. Watt Lao Buddhamamakaram temple doesn’t look like it belongs in Columbus and yet, there it is. It was built in 2009 and I had no idea of its existence until we stumbled upon it during our Columbus, Ohio visit.
What an amazing find!
The next day, my husband surprised me by taking us to the temple to take pictures. It was a rare sunny, cloudless day. The winter sun is so bright and if I thought Watt Lao Buddhamamakaram was glittery at night, the daytime sparkle was almost blinding and oh-so-beautiful. If you’re in Columbus with a car, it’s worth the drive. It’s probably only about 10-15 minutes from downtown (unless it’s rush hour).
